Breathe In the Future, Breathe Out the Past

Posted on 29 / 11 / 2011

The past is never dead. It’s not even the past

― William Faulkner

William Shakespeare says, “What’s past is prologue” but for all we celebrate about fresh starts, you’ll never understand why you’re at a certain place if you conveniently sweep your past under the rug. You can’t deny it. It will always be a part of you. But you are not your past. Even your cells are renewed all the time. And if you’re a dork who subscribes to the many-worlds interpretation, there are different yous in parallel universes doing amazing new things!

This season, friends and I have seemed to come around the table a lot more with a greater focus on the past, on looking back.

Fashion does that all the time, it shouldn’t seem strange that its writers and stylists reference and remix even from their own lives. I love what we share, their journey becomes our journey in a way. I love hearing when people come out of their darkest, but what excites me is seeing that life is getting better every day.

You needed the tears and the lessons. You needed what we conveniently package in one phrase as being the past for that.

GRATEFUL for… The Vamoose (I discovered this label shopping with my stylist friends at Rockstar, Singapore over the weekend. The Vamoose’s style references are so bang on, their love for semi-precious stones and art resonates with my heart. Pieces so beautifully made, even their blog makes me happy… I realise I have the same visual references on my mood boards at home), late night dinner parties, the Sucker Punch movie soundtrack (horrid movie, kick arse soundtrack), catch-up drinks with old friends, veal ravioli, and canciones españolas.
